Autophon has been founded as a specialist manufacturer for automated
telephone systems in Solothurn in 1922. In 1931, the company started production
of "Audio frequency Telephone Broadcast Receivers" (NF-Telephonrundspruch or
NF-TR). This system used the Telephone lines for the distribution of broadcast
programmes and worked on audio frequencies - in contrast to the later HF-Telephonrundspruch
or HF-TR, where six radio programmes have been distributed over telephone
lines using frequencies in the longwave band, not otherwise used in Switzerland.
The HF-TR service remained active until 1998.
Later, Autophon produced receivers under Lorenz License and started their own
broadcast receiver production in 1935. Well into the fifties, Autophon was
a popular manufacturer of radios in Switzerland, but the company didn't cope
with the switch to FM and television receivers.
Autophon was an active manufacturer of commercial and military communications
equipment, many receivers and transceivers used in Swiss Army came from the
plants near Solothurn.
The telecommunication segment of Autophone was merged into Ascom in 1987.
