Similar to other American radio manufacturers, Hammarlund started as
producer and distributor of parts for the construction of "home-brew" wireless
receivers. In 1931, Hammarlund sold the first complete receiver, the
"Comet". This and the following "Comet Pro" were the first
commercially available superheterodyne receivers.
The "Comet Super Pro" was the ultimate shortwave receiver available
in 1936, from this so called "SP", the development went over the prototype
SP-10 to the regular model SP-110; the SP-600 as the latest model of this series
has been produced until 1972. Over all the years, it's front panel with
it's windows for the main- und bandspread tuning has only slightly been altered.
In the middle price segment, a second series beginning with the HQ-120 (or HQ-120X with
integrated crystal filter) was presented in 1938. In the following years,
this series with the HQ-140, HQ-160 and HQ-180 receivers was very successful
among ham radio operators and production run out in 1973. The frontplate with
main- and bandpsread tuning dial window and the optional electric clock is
also quite typical.
The attempt to enter the transistorized amateur radio receiver market with the
HQ-215 was not really successful, Hammarlund ceased receiver production in the
early seventies and the company ended after several take overs, amongst others by
the Cardwell group.
