The VEB Kombinat Nachrichtenelektronik in Koepenick (Volkseigener Betrieb
means "owned by the people") was the manufacturer in East Berlin,
(German Democratic Republic) providing high grade shortwave communications
equipment to the armed forces and services not only to the former GDR but also to
several other Eastern European countries in the Warsaw Pact zone.
After reunification of the two German states, many of these sets did appear
on the used gear / surplus market.
The East German receivers offer far above average shortwave reception qualities
and became a challenge to so well known German brands like Rhode & Schwarz.
Rohde & Schwarz was in fact the company that did take over RFT after reunification,
not much later they did close the RFT plant.
One of the earliest professional multi-band sets from the sixtiers built
in Koepenick featured a turret tuner arrangement with a analog non-linear dial,
You might find further informations in radiomuseum.org, search for
Funkwerk Dabendorf
and Funkwerk Köpenick (sorry,
but You need to copy the word with the Umlaut ö).
The receivers of the EKV-series featured
mechanical IF filters and a mechnical digital frequency readout, some combinations
had provisions for antenna diversity and RTTY / FSK-decoding (the ones with
the little CRT tube).
The next generation was the EKD-100 series appearing in 1975, You had to
chose the reception frequency by means of decadic thumbwheels. The EKD 300
has been introduced in 1980/1 and had a conventional tuning knob as well
as a keypad for typing in a desired frequency directly. The 1986 model
EKD 500 featured an integrated FSK-decoder and
could be remote controlled by a separate controller or a second EKD-500.
The EKD-700 was only produced in a preliminary series of ten sets and a few
prototypes, after the End of the GDR, Rohde did take over the company and
RFT closed down, before production of this last set started.
A peculiar set was the amateur radio receiver AFE 12 covering the 80/160 m
bands, this set has been sold for a very competitive price in the West.
